The present work aims to reveal a three-dimensional image of the problematic area known as the Bellavista market. This hardened core, solidified over time, brings together one of the largest commercial zones in the city of Sullana. Although the research does not attempt to solve the problem, it seeks to create a database –information– for future urban projects of this type.
Based on a metaphor that conceives marketplaces as living organisms, an analytical dissection is carried out –similar to that used in biological sciences– in order to understand the structure of the market: body, systems, organs, tissues, and cells. A methodology is employed that combines multiple techniques –artistic, academic, and scientific– and instruments –sketches, drawings, diagrams; and a field logbook– to collect information and compose a faithful image of the current conflictive situation.
The results obtained show that the current conflict –the invasion of public space and the concentration of informal commerce– is something natural in this type of project. And that, first, the integration of a team (a central nervous organ) in charge of organizing, controlling, and formalizing the vendors –who occupy public space– is necessary. Likewise, the redesign or modernization of both the market and public urban spaces is required, always seeking resilient solutions.
